5 Tips to Care For Your Dental Implants

Dental implants are not an uncommon procedure these days, and they can make a great difference to people who have them fitted. They are usually fitted in the bone of the jaw or skull and meld with the bone, and can then be used to hold a crown or denture in place. Very effective, they do need regular care, so here’s our list of the top 5 tips on caring for dental implants.

Clean Twice a Day

Your dental implants should be cleaned with care at least twice a day. This should be done using a soft-bristle toothbrush, and you should take care to attend to every part of the implant that is visible. Food and other debris can collect around the implant if left unattended to, and this can lead to problems with bacteria and more. Brush under and around the crown for the best results. Your dentist will be able to tell you about the correct cleaning procedure.

The Right Toothpaste

It is all too often the case that, when shopping, people pick a toothpaste that is the right price or a brand they recognize. With dental implants – and indeed with teeth – it pays to use the right type of toothpaste, which for implants is a low-abrasive one that will not cause unnecessary wear. Ask your pharmacist or dentist for advice on the right toothpaste to use, as it does make a great difference in keeping your teeth and implants clean.

Don’t Forget the Awkward Places

Even brushing as directed above, and using the right toothpaste, can sometimes not be enough, so it is recommended that if you have implants you but a nylon-coated interdental brush. This is a smaller brush that is designed to get into those awkward spaces your regular toothbrush finds hard to reach, and it can be a great help in keeping your oral health in the highest order.

Consider Flossing

Many people do not floss on a daily basis, but for those with implants in helps very much to do so. Use a specific floss that is intended for use with dental implants – there are some available and your dentist will help you find one – or one that is unwaxed as these will have the best effect.

Oral Irrigation

This is something that helps keep your mouth, teeth, gums, and all other areas clean and healthy. Using a recommended and approved oral irrigation is a sensible thing to do on a regular basis. You can find advice on them at your dentist or a pharmacist may also be able to advise you as to the right ones to use.

All of the above represent good advice for looking after your teeth, but for those with dental implants, these are very important steps to take if you are to keep them in top order for the required life. If in any doubt as to how to keep your dental impacts clean, have a chat with your dentist who will be more than happy to help.
