In this blog post I just wanted to share some advice with regards to toothache during the current lockdown. If you are struggling with toothache here are a few things that can help
1- Sensitivity if you are getting sensitivity to cold then this could be a result of the nerve within the tooth being sensitized one of the things that can be used for this is Sensodyne toothpaste or GC tooth Mousse both can be purchased from most pharmacies or Amazon. The best way to use these is to rub them into the sensitive area after brushing and then do not rinse afterward.
2- Painkillers – The most common painkillers to use for toothache are the ones available over the counter which include paracetamol and Ibuprofen, these are available from the pharmacy but please speak to the pharmacist to make sure you can take them and the correct dosage. Using painkillers should only be a temporary measure and should consult with your dentist as soon as you can.
I hope that helps a little please stay safe
As we enter another week of lockdown I wanted to re-emphasize a few things to bear in mind and to keep focused on during this time
- Be sure to connect with friends and family. You can use facetime and apps like Whatsapp to do this. See my previous blog post about keeping in touch. If you are aware of any vulnerable neighbours or people in your area then maybe just give them a ring or knock on the door to see if they are ok.
- Media- I would recommend limiting the amount of time spent on watching TV and also social media there can be a lot of negativity out there and you generally only need to spend a few minutes a day to catch up on the days events and then be up to date.
- Eat well – remember to look after yourself eat a balanced meal at regular times of the day.
- Addictions- It can be stressful and can be very easy to slip into bad habits like smoking or alcohol to cope so be aware of this and use alternative coping strategies like exercise going for a walk or reading a book or meditation
- Past experiences- we have all been through difficult times in the past and succeeded and this is good to reflect on at this time. this too shall pass.
Hope that helps
In this series of blogs I have been addressing some of the issues that can affect us during the current lockdown and giving some advice.
One of the more common issues can be pain from a wisdom tooth that was ongoing. You may have been down to have a wisdom tooth removed, which has now been postponed due to the current lockdown. Here is some advice
- Wisdom teeth if impacted usually flare up during periods of stress or low immunity so it can be quite common during a stressful event. If you can relax and calm and look after your general health this will help.
- In most cases food trapping is the cause of irritation to the gum around the partially erupted wisdom tooth. One of the best ways to remove this is by rinsing with holt salty water three to four times a day. If you dissolve a tablespoon of salt in a cup full of warm water (same temperature as a cup of tea) and then swill in the mouth for at least 30-40 seconds this will help remove food particles and also help calm the gum area around the wisdom tooth.
- Pain relief in the form of painkillers usually Ibuprofen is the best to take (please check you are able to take this without any issues) as this helps reduce the inflammation.
