Recently also been getting quite a few questions about tooth wear and why are my teeth wearing away so i guess this is a good time to cover this area here as well.

Tooth wear can be due to a number of different reasons although it can be  grouped into four areas

1, Tooth wear due to bruxism or grinding this can be due to a habit at night or during the day the exact reason for grinding is not known in most cases although it can be a stress relieving habit. If you think you grind your teeth you may find your muscles are sore or you have a sore jaw in the mornings due to the excessive pressure.
2, Tooth wear due to erosion this can be due to a very acidic diet so if your having alot of food which is acidic in nature then this can cause the teeth to wear down. Some of the main foods which cause this can be fizzy drinks and citric drinks like orange juice. If you think this may be happening then a good idea to look at your diet if you need help with this then we can help you with a diet sheet to record everything

3,Excessive brushing can result in wear of the teeth also there are a few toothpastes which can be abrasive in nature be careful to use only light pressure which brushing

4, Tooth wear can also be to internal acids if you have an eating disorder or if you have gastric reflux then this can result in an acidic environment in your mouth causing tooth wear if you need advice on this then there is a great website for further help seed eating disorders

so there are a few other reasons and also in most people we find that the tooth wear is due to a combination of factors so if your concerned about your teeth wearing away then give us a call on 01772 717316

Teeth wearing away?

Saturday, January 15th, 2011

Had a few people  recently who  have had erosion on their teeth.

What is erosion? – The very gradual reduction of the teeth my something acidic. the acid can be from the diet and in most cases is due to fizzy drinks which contain a high amount of carbonated acid and thus result in erosion of the teeth

so how can you avoid it

1. Reduce or eliminate your consumption of fizzy drinks

2, Drink carbonated drinks through a straw this helps reduce the effect on the teeth

3, Avoid brushing teeth straight afterwards as this can increse the effects of the erosion better to chew some sugar free chewing gum

4, Avoid swishing the drink in your mouth

5, Better to drink carbonated drinks at below room tempreture this reduces the effect

if your concerned or worried then give us a call on 01772 717316

Dental Erosion

Monday, July 20th, 2009

More and More people are becoming aware of teeth being worn away or becoming sensitive as a result of an acidic diet

It is known that acidic beverages like sodas and citric juices like grapefruit and orange juice can damage teeth.

1,  identify the source of erosion, possibly with the help of a dental professional this may intake keeping a diet sheet for a few days and then having this examined by a dental professional who can study this for patterns and certain products which are causing the damage.

2, Then steps can be taken to control and prevent further damage.

3,  Reducing consumption of the suspected food or beverage to the absolute minimum.
