Dental Care and Diabetes

If you’re a diabetes patient, it is no surprise to hear that diabetes affects the health of your entire body – and this includes your mouth, teeth, and gums!
There are a few oral problems to watch for if you have diabetes:

  1. Dry Mouth – Since diabetes decreases saliva flow, it can lead to common issues like soreness, tooth decay, infections, and ulcers.
  2. Gum Inflammation – Diabetes patients have a reduced ability to fight infections and that includes in the mouth, which can lead to gum disease.
  3. Thrush –  Some antibiotics can increase the risk of developing thrush which is a fungal infection of the mouth and tongue. The fungus thrives on the high levels of sugar in the saliva and can give your mouth and tongue a burning feeling.
  4. Inflammation and Poor Healing – People with diabetes will heal more slowly due to reduced blood flow, so it is important to watch for areas of inflammation and healing after oral procedures.

Knowledge is power, so despite the increased risk for certain oral issues if you have diabetes, there are everyday things you can do to help keep your mouth healthy and prevent issues from arising – or minimize the impact if they do:

  1. Maintain normal blood sugars as best as possible.
  2. If you suffer from dry mouth try to reduce dryness by using mouthwash without and focus on hydration.
  3. Keep your mouth clean by brushing approximately 30 minutes after every meal.
  4. Floss regularly.
  5. Take caution when using dental appliances such as retainers and dentures and remove them daily for cleaning.
  6. Keep regular checkups with your dentist at least every 6 months, if not more frequently.
  7. Inform your dentist of your medications and any changes in your health.
